Backing up open files

To backup open files you will need support from the underlying OS. Windows XP/2003/2008, by default, come with Volume Shadow Copy, which allows backups of open files. For older platforms, e.g. Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000 or NetWare, we would recommend using a third party 'open file manager' to be able to backup open files under those OSs

*Open file support is not required on Linux/Unix/Mac OS X/FreeBSD because no files are held exclusively open by applications.
